havent been to mazatlan though I heard good things. I can say that I thought puerto vallarta was horrible. After 3 months travelling around mexico, seeing trashy US food chains everywhere was horrible. A town built to be like america but cheap and in mexico. If you like it because of easy connections etc head up the coast to Sayulita instead, at least thats retained some charm
